How to stop Edge from opening when I like a login wallpaper

If there is a way to turn it off, that'd be great. Every time I like a wallpaper at the login screen, I want to get more like it, but now Windows Edge opens. I hate it. It used to increase the number of that type of wallpaper coming up. I like nature ones and want more of those, but now I have to ignore them to bypass this 'feature.'

Sometimes I like to look up the photographer or the wallpaper, so it should be an option on the screen. Please make it an option, because sometimes I have things to get done.

I don't have bing wallpaper installed. There are no installed extensions for Edge that should involve this.

Currently, there is no specific setting mentioned in the provided context that allows you to disable Microsoft Edge from opening when you like a wallpaper at the login screen. This behavior seems to be a feature of Windows that is tied to how wallpapers are managed and displayed.

If you want to manage how web links open from applications like Outlook or Teams, you can configure policies to control which browser opens web links, but this does not directly address the wallpaper liking feature at the login screen.

For now, you might consider providing feedback to Microsoft regarding this feature, as user feedback is valuable for improving products. You can do this by pressing alt + shift + I in Microsoft Edge to open the feedback dialog.

    Hi Six

Welcome to the Microsoft Q&A Forum!

Sorry about the frustration, I know it’s annoying when a simple “I like this wallpaper” suddenly launches Edge instead of just helping Spotlight learn your preferences; this change took place back in April this year and there isn't a way to disable it.

If you want Microsoft to know this change is a problem, the best way is to send it straight through the Feedback Hub, since that’s the channel Windows engineers actually monitor for UX issues like this.

    1. Press Windows key + F to open Feedback Hub directly.
    2. Choose Report a problem.
    3. Category: Desktop Environment → Lock screen
    4. Describe the issue (e.g., “Clicking ‘I like it’ on Spotlight now opens Edge; please restore the old behavior where it only influenced wallpaper selection.”)
    5. Submit.

Thank you for taking the time to share thoughtful feedback, it truly helps shape a better Windows experience for everyone.

    Have a great day!

    Hello Six,

Thanks for posting. To stop Edge from opening after liking a Windows Spotlight wallpaper, adjust a setting in Windows:

    1. Go to Settings > Personalization >; Lock screen.
    2. Ensure the Background is set to Windows Spotlight.
    3. Disable Get fun facts, tips, tricks, and more on your lock screen.

Turning this off will prevent Edge from opening, but you'll still see Spotlight wallpapers. Liking images won’t change future wallpapers.

If you want more nature wallpapers without Edge opening:

    • Use Windows Spotlight but don't use the Like button.
    • Switch to Slideshow and select a folder of nature images.
    • Download nature packs from the Microsoft Store under Themes.

    Best,

    Rez
