This morning when trying to open my email account in outlook I was forced to use for the first time my laptop passkey, now i can't access my original email account in outlook only the new one also forced on me to create after the first time a passkey on my laptop had to be used. I can still access my email on my phone but not my laptop, my preferred access. please help. ps AI suggested remove any outlook credential stored, but only my email address was stored as a credential in Windows, and I read that removing it could make this problem worse. And my account is both Business and Education even though my account is private - my web provider made it so.

    Dear @Anna Pateman

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum.

Based on my understanding, is it correct that when signing in to Outlook on the laptop, Windows required using a passkey (a password sign-in method via Windows Hello)?

    • After setting up the passkey, Outlook on the laptop created new Window profile.
    • Therefore, the original email account and old Window profile no longer appears on the laptop, but email still works normally on the phone.

    Am I understanding this correctly?

On that new Windows profile, please try downloading the Office app and signing in with your Outlook account. That profile is just a new Windows profile for the computer.

Removing a credential from the Windows Credential Manager is actually very safe. It’s the equivalent of ‘forgetting a saved password.’ It simply forces the computer to ask you for the password again. It never deletes emails, contacts, or account data.

About the passkey: This is a new Microsoft security feature. When signing in, choose Use another account or Sign-in options to use the correct original email.

Also, could you please help me detail more about "your account is both Business and Education even though your account is private – your web provider made it so"?

If there’s anything I may have misunderstood, I would truly appreciate it if you could provide a bit more detail to help me better understand your needs.

    Looking forward to your response!
