Teams does not recognize my Hello credentials

I have fingerprint set up for Microsoft Hello, and a passcode that I use for logging in to my MS account as well. These functions appear to work perfectly.

Teams, however, not so much. When I try to log in to Teams, I am not offered either a fingerprint or passcode authentication, only a 2FA number sent by email. When I enter that, I get "Something Went Wrong: something went wrong registering [email]] for Windows Hellow. Your account has been added to Windows, but next time you use the account we'll ask you to verify your account using Windows Hello". And I don't get in to Teams.

Next Step?

    Dear Kirk McKinney

Thank you for reaching out to the Microsoft Q&A Community. I understand you are experiencing issues signing in to Microsoft Teams using Windows Hello credentials. Here are the most valid and streamlined steps to resolve this:

    1. Verify Windows Hello Setup
      • Ensure Windows Hello is fully configured on your device under Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
      • Confirm that fingerprint and PIN are active.
    2. Check Teams Version
      • Update Microsoft Teams to the latest version. Outdated clients may not support Windows Hello integration.
    3. Clear Teams Cache
      • Close Teams completely.
      • Navigate to %appdata%\Microsoft\Teams and delete the contents of the folder.
      • Restart Teams and sign in again.
    4. Re-register Windows Hello for Account
      • Go to Settings > Accounts > Access work or school.
      • Disconnect your account, then reconnect it.
      • Reconfigure Windows Hello after reconnecting.
    5. Enable Modern Authentication
      • If you are using Teams for work or school, confirm that your organization has Modern Authentication enabled in Microsoft 365 Admin Center. Without this, Windows Hello cannot be used for Teams sign-in.
    6. Fallback Sign-in
      • If Windows Hello still fails, use your Microsoft account password or 2FA temporarily. This ensures access while troubleshooting.
